OED: A Brief History of Singular ‘They’ →

I posted these tweets giving some of my judgements about linguistic wokeness:

Some folks complain about "they" as a gender-neutral singular pronoun. But English has either been OK with no singular/plural distinction for "you" or there is a plural "you" that provides a model for an explicitly plural "they": "they all" is to "they" as "you all" is to "you."

I think "they" as a non-gendered 3d-person singular is a great innovation. But I think linguistic wokeness goes too far when it tries to ban metaphorical use of the word "tribe." And despite being potentially hurtful, the word "master" has so many uses, it would be costly to ban.

Yep. The singular "they" was part of the English language for hundreds of years.
